My grandpa was a drill instructor (or sergeant... I can't remember which is for what branch) in the Navy, and carried that attitude into his home life.  My dad was in the Navy, but I don't know him well enough to say what he's like.  And my ex-husband was in the Army for a short time - he left before he finished basic, though, when a wall locker fell on him and crushed his foot - he opted to leave rather than be recycled.  But he hated it anyway, and I don't think he has the right personality for the military - too much of a free spirit mindset.  I wanted to join the Peace Corps, but decided against it when I became pregnant with my oldest son.  Since I have three military branches covered in three generations of male relatives, think that means my son will join the Air Force?

You'd be surprised how little the marines have changed.  Either way, the same argument applies.  my dad was in the service and his home port was on a marine base.  he wasn't like that at all.  Neither were any of his friends.  and amazingly, he was of Italian descent, too!
