You know, now that you mention it, I'd have to agree.  When Dad came home after a drug bust, he was always excited, but if he had to tow some dumbass sailor in because he couldn't (or WOULDN'T) pay attention to a small craft advisory, or some such MLE task, he was always in a pissy mood.

those are pretty bad, but believe it or not, mle (maritime law enforcement) is equally as bad and sometimes worse.  Pirates (in the south, mostly) stubbern fishers that try to prevent being boarded with firepower and shithead drunks out recreational boating really make life suck for those guys.  not to mention the asshole fishers that deliberately run out of gas so they can get a free tow into port.

Thanks for that information Debbi.  I knew a smidgen of that from my dad's stint in the CG, but not all the details.   And I'm sure you're aware that I didn't mean my comment as a slam against the CG, but I'll say it anyway (wait, I just did!).  As far as the scope of their duties, I think "Coasties" are in the toughest branch, regardless of what Department they receive their funds from.  I remember at least a dozen occasions in high school when Dad would come home and regale us with the story of the latest drug bust they had participated in.
