You don't have a virus
scanner?? Umm... WHY NOT?????
Go to http://www.geocities.com/npicrash/protection.html and scroll down to the part that says
PROTECTOR PLUS, and right-click on the small icon next to it,
and select "SAVE TARGET AS" (if you just click on it, you could
be waiting for several minutes for the download to start, so don't bother...
just use the SAVE TARGET AS option). This virus scanner
comes with unlimited free updates, and has the option to scan your e-mail as
well (assuming you use a mail program on your computer). If you are the
paranoid type, after the download is complete, you can proceed to http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_pcc.asp where you can scan any/all files on your
computer without actually installing anything... a very convenient site (this is
the one that Lee mentioned), but it requires that you go to the site anytime you
want to be scanned (not convenient if you are always downloading stuff).
Which takes us back to what I just went through (download a virus scanner, like
the one I am offering).
THIS is another great online virus scanner (Symantec,
which I believe is the one that Debbi suggested) which works about the same way
as Housecall. Symantec also offers the options to test your firewalls for
any "holes" that might be present, using a separate online page, much the same
way as Steve Gibson's GRC.com security page, specifically "Shields Up" ( https://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 ).
On a final note, to cover the exact
same thing that Debbi did (I woulda been on sooner, but the 5 year old
discovered NickJr.com with his aunt while I was resting), DO NOT RUN ANY PROGRAM THAT YOU GET THROUGH E-MAIL IF YOU DON'T
KNOW WHAT IT IS... AT THE VERY LEAST SCAN IT FIRST!!!. Oh,
and one further note... I suggest getting a virus scanner that watches your
e-mail, like the one that I plugged several times from my site... especially now
that I have proven that JavaScripting can be sent through the list, and be
totally hidden... for more information about what you are susceptible to on a
mailing list that doesn't allow attachments, try reading up on the KAKWORM virus
HERE (my
personal website) or HERE or
at http://www.protectorplus.com/virus_info/worms/kak.htm.
Other than that, I'm not sure what else I can add here... just keep on your
toes, and practice caution.
