Just got back from our local
fireworks show (man, I miss being able to do that stuff with the department back
home)... they tried a new concept (to here) this year... timing the display to
music that was being played by our local radio station, WYBR 102.3. It
started off kind of rocky (some older woman in the car next to us complained
that we had our stereo on, which was playing the music for the display, same as
the other 500+ cars around, and very rudely asked us to turn it down), but
things picked up a bit when they played Creed. I found it kind of
interesting that among all these songs that they were using, that had some sort
of symbolism to living in America, and patriotism, that they would choose to
play "Higher"... I'm guessing since it's about the only song you hear on the
radio by them around here... that, and WAWO, that it would be the only song that
anyone else would know. So as Tara turned up the music louder again for
this song, the woman in the car next to us started to glare and mumble under her
breath about "kids"... luckily Def Leppard's "Pour Some Sugar On Me" which
followed caused her and her husband to decide that it was time to leave...
interesting that out of the several thousand people there, and the several
hundred cars there, all with their stereo's all tuned to the same station, and
with the radio van less than 40 feet away, blasting out the exact same music,
that we would end up next to the music-haters. But once they were gone,
things went well again. They chose "Born In The USA", "Moulin Rouge",
"American Woman" (the version by Lenny Kravitz), and finished off with "Proud To
Be An American"... at least they *kinda* kept on topic. Talked to the guy
from the radio station after, and asked if he'd be up to playing American Pearl
sometime (even offered to bring in some stickers and CD's for the promotional
side of things), but he said that they can only play the Top 40 bands... and
since AP still hasn't made it big on the global scale (he used the bands Creed,
3DD, and Staind as an example), he couldn't get them any airtime... yet.
{=o/
All in all, it was an interesting
evening... reminds me a lot of July 1st holiday back home (Symphony Of Fire
in Vancouver)... really made me miss being behind the scenes, helping to put on
the fireworks back home... but still was kind of nice to be a spectator for
once. Might learn to enjoy having other people do all the work once in a
while. LOL
